Why The Makeover You Need Is On The Inside Not The Outside

April 5, 2019

I am months away from a milestone birthday, the big 3-0. An age where individuals, especially women, feel the need to do something different with their look as a way of rejuvenating themselves in one way or another. I have never been big on changing my appearance.  If I desire a simple change, it is typically a hair change. Sometimes a simple change is enough to put me in a better mood.

To be honest, like most people, I have had body image struggles throughout my life.

Now, however, I am in a place where I am able to accept me for who I am. I do not feel the desire for a makeover or anything truly drastic. If anything, I have done an inner makeover which I feel is a lot more useful and has effects that will last a lot longer. Some steps I’ve  taken as a part of my internal makeover include working out, eating better, letting go of toxic relationships, and realizing that I do not have to be a people pleaser. It is very freeing not to be a people pleaser. I’ve been able to come to a decision and realize not everyone is going to agree with me and that’s okay because that’s life.

At this stage in my life, I am the happiest I have been in a long time. Of course, everything is not always rainbows and butterflies but things are a lot better than they once were. I imagine myself in this place of positive thinking with the occasional curveball for the rest of my life.

It is my personal belief that, as a society, we think of makeovers as a restart to life when the actuality is that most of the time the changes we need and desire are internal.

Some men and women go all out, partaking in fad diets and other extreme measures to fix something that someone in passing may have told them was flawed. They may find these flaws themselves because they are holding themselves to a standard created by societal norms through social media.

I wish our culture could get to a place where we embrace beauty as an all-encompassing concept. One that shows beauty in all forms. These material possessions are not what would create a self-esteem boost and people need to realize that. No matter what others tell you, good or bad about your appearance, personality or anything else, none of that will matter until you get yourself to the correct  mindset. The inner work makeover is what helps change your perspective. Everyone has beauty, maybe they just haven’t found it within themselves yet. Once they do, no other makeovers will be necessary.
